Understanding BMW Door Light Sockets

After about 2004, all BMW models have a factory door light socket at the lower edge of each door panel. It is usually a small circular housing with the factory door light bulb in it. The bulb is often a plain white LED or incandescent lamp as a factory part. It means the factory light casts plain white light on the ground when you open the door.

The socket is usually on the inside lower edge of the door and faces directly to the ground. You should open the door and look at the lower section of the door panel. I’m sure you can see it easily. You will see a small round fitting which is about 30–40mm in diameter. In fact, you can install both the original bulb and the replacement LED door lights in the socket.

For those eager to enhance their BMW experience, this guide on How to Install BMW Door Lights will provide you with all the necessary steps and tips.

The size of the socket is the same for BMW models from 2004 to about 2022, including 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series, X1 through X7, and all M series models. However, early 3 Series E46 models (pre-2004) have a different socket. Therefore, you need to contact us on WhatsApp (+852 5 443 1653) if you have an E46 or earlier model.

The BMW range covers several badge types. You need to make your selection based on the actual trim or identification of your vehicle. BMW Roundel is a blue and white circular BMW logo. It is suitable for all BMW models regardless of trim. What’s more, it is also the most popular choice and looks like a factory part on any BMW. BMW M Badge is a blue, purple, and red M badge which is often used on M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, and all M Sport trims. If your car has M Sport on the exterior, this logo will match well with your car.

BMW M Sport Logo is an ‘M Sport’ text badge which is different from the M badge. It is more suitable for M Sport trim models compared with the M badge. BMW Beam Rings is a special pattern where the four BMW rings are arranged in a beam projection format. It is very popular among BMW owners. Moreover, this logo is different from any factory design. What You Will Need

First, you should buy BMW door lights with a preferred logo for your model. Second, you need to prepare the included removal pick (comes with every CarLightsLogo BMW door light set) and spend 5 minutes on each door. Finally, you don’t need other tools or to remove any part of the door panel.

Step-by-Step Installation — All BMW Models 2004+

Step 1: Open the door fully. You need enough space to touch the lower inside edge of the door panel. It is best to open the door 90 degrees.

Step 2: Locate the door light socket. It is at the lowest section of the inside door panel, which faces the ground. You will see a small circular fitting.

Step 3: You can insert the pointed end of the removal pick into the small notch or slot near the door light socket. Next, you should twist the pick softly, and you will feel the socket release from the door panel.

Step 4: Pull the socket out. It is connected with a short wire harness, which will come out about 3–5cm from the door panel on its cable.

Step 5: Take off the factory bulb from the socket. The factory bulb clips into a small connector. You should press the clip and pull to release it.

Step 6: You can put the new BMW LED door light projector into the same connector. The connector is keyed, and it will only fit one way. This means the lens will only face downward.

Step 7: Push the socket back into the door panel. Then you should rotate it clockwise to lock it into position.

Step 8: Open and close the door to test. The BMW logo should project onto the ground as soon as you open the door and disappear when you close. You don’t need any coding or wiring modification. Moreover, there is no need to visit a BMW dealer.

Do BMW Door Lights Require Coding?

No. You do not need to contact a dealer for coding on standard BMW door lights (non-OEM). You can connect them to the door switch circuit through the existing socket connector. The door switch circuit is independent of the BMW iDrive, coding, and CAN bus system. The door lights can work well without changing any software. However, if you are installing BMW OEM illuminated door sills (a totally different product), you actually need the coding. But our LED logo projectors do not need.

BMW M Sport vs BMW M — Which Badge Is Correct for Your Car?

Many people are unsure about this question. BMW M Sport combines appearance with equipment. It is a package suitable for most standard BMW models. It also includes body-kit elements, sports seats, and an M Sport badge. However, the car still uses a standard BMW engine. BMW M (M2, M3, M4, etc.) represents BMW’s full performance models, which are equipped with M engines, chassis, and drivetrain systems.

In fact, M Sport trim models are more common in daily life. People can choose the M Sport door light or roundel version for them. Instead, for genuine BMW M models, they can choose the M badge door light. For all versions, you can use the same socket and follow the same installation process.
