How to Install Tesla Door Lights

How to Install Tesla Door Lights — Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Tesla door light installation is the most common problem we receive from Tesla owners. The process is largely different from installing door lights on BMW, Mercedes, or Audi. This is because Tesla vehicles do not have the traditional factory door light sockets like most other car brands. In this guide, we provide a specific installation method for Tesla models, including each step in detail on how to install Tesla door lights. We also discuss the anti-short-circuit issue of cheap Tesla door lights. What’s more, we can also help you confirm which Tesla models and build dates are suitable.

Understanding the Process: How to Install Tesla Door Lights

This guide covers everything you need, from the basics to the advanced techniques on How to Install Tesla Door Lights, ensuring a seamless transition to your new lighting system.

Most cars like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, and many other brands have a factory door light socket at the lower edge of the door panel. You can put the door light bulb directly in this circular socket. Also, the installation on these cars is quite easy. You just need to remove the old bulb and put in the new one. It takes you about 5 minutes per door to finish the work.

However, Tesla vehicles do not have this factory socket. The designer didn’t include the standard OEM door light socket on the lower door panel when they designed the doors. It means you cannot use the simple plug-and-play way to install Tesla door lights. Instead, you can choose from the two alternative mounting methods. First, you can buy lights with a magnetic clip system. Second, you can choose lights with an adhesive back. When you install these lights, you need to use the dedicated extension cable to route power from the door frame area to the LED projection unit.

This sounds very complex, but it is actually easy to carry out. As long as they order the correct product and refer to the included installation guide, most Tesla owners can finish the work for all four doors in less than an hour. They don’t need any other tools.

The Anti-Short-Circuit Issue — Critical for Tesla Owners

This is the most important part of this guide. People can easily buy cheap Tesla door lights on marketplaces like AliExpress at very low prices. These cheap products usually use a basic extension cable without short-circuit protection. There are two common reasons that the basic cable can cause a momentary short circuit. First, when you open or close the door rapidly. Second, when you put the cable in the wrong place in the door jamb, and it gets caught as the door closes.

On a Tesla, if a short circuit occurs in the door circuit, an error message will appear on the touchscreen. For example, there will be warnings like “door malfunction” or an alert about the door electronics. In some worse conditions, owners should visit a Tesla Service Centre to clear the error from the system. In fact, it is inconvenient and may cost you a lot.

Our Tesla door lights use a special extension cable with built-in short-circuit protection. The cable has a protective sleeve at the door jamb contact point, which can prevent pinching. In addition, it is equipped with a circuit that can cut off the power in the event of an overload. This protection is invisible during normal use, but it can totally avoid touchscreen errors. In fact, it is the most important quality difference between our Tesla door lights and cheaper lights.

What Is Included in the Box

Each CarLightsLogo Tesla door light set includes: LED door light projectors (the quantity depends on the set; you can order for front doors only or all four doors); purpose-designed anti-short-circuit extension cable; magnetic clips or adhesive mounting pads; cable management clips and a printed installation guide with step-by-step photos.

Step-by-Step Installation — Model 3 and Model Y

Step 1: You need to clean the mounting area before starting. Then open the front door fully. You should use a dry microfibre cloth to clean the underside of the door panel where the LED projector will be installed. You must remove all dust, grease, or water.

Step 2: Attach the projector. You can use the magnetic clip or adhesive mount to attach the LED projector to the clean area on the underside of the door panel. You should take care the projector lens faces directly to the ground. At last, you need to press it firmly and hold for 30 seconds if you use the adhesive mount.

Step 3: Route the cable. You should feed the extension cable along the inside edge of the door toward the door jamb. The cable should run inside the door seal rubber channel, so you need to push it gently into the channel and ensure it will not be exposed inside the car. In this way, the cable will not be pinched at the car door hinge.

Step 4: Connect to the power point. There is a small connector at the end of the extension cable. You can plug it into the designated power point inside the door jamb. The exact location may differ for different models and years. At this time, you can refer to the included installation guide for the exact position for your car.

Step 5: Test the installation. You should test by opening and closing the door five to six times at normal speed. The LED projector should turn on when you open the door and turn off when you close the door. Moreover, the cable should not pull, pinch, or move during normal door operation.

Step 6: Repeat for remaining doors. The process is the same for all four doors. At first, you may need more time to install on front doors because you should learn the routing. When it comes to rear doors, you will be faster because you are more familiar with the process.

Will Tesla Door Lights Void My Warranty?

Our Tesla door lights are non-invasive accessories. They are not a permanent modification to the vehicle and will not change Tesla software. What’s more, they also do not connect to the CAN bus, high-voltage system, or HVAC. As a clip-on accessory that is powered from the door jamb, they are actually the same as any other aftermarket interior accessories. The lights do not interact with Tesla’s onboard systems if you install them correctly with our anti-short-circuit cable. However, if you have specific warranty concerns, we suggest you confirm with the local Tesla Service Centre.

Available Logo Patterns

We offer many kinds of Tesla logo patterns. For example, Tesla T logo in white (most popular), Tesla T logo in blue, Tesla word-mark text, and other design patterns. You can find all 14 available patterns in the Tesla Door Lights collection. Moreover, you can see the exact projection image on each product page, so you can confirm the design before ordering.
